About the Festival
MAME welcomes renowned composer Melody Bober for its 2021 Composition Festival. In the morning, Melody will discuss the importance of teaching composition, how to teach composition, and her own journey in composing and publishing her music. In the afternoon, winners of the Composition Festival will perform their compositions.

MELODY BOBER
As a composer, Melody Bober enjoys creating motivational piano pieces that foster her students’ understanding and love of music.
Melody graduated summa cum laude from the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana with a bachelor’s degree in music education. She later received a Master of Arts degree in piano performance from Minnesota State University, Moorhead. Melody credits much of her success to her influential teachers who include Joel Shapiro and Andrew Froelich (piano), Mary Hoffman (music education), and Tony Caramia (jazz).
An active church pianist and accompanist, Melody has also held the position of church music director. In addition to teaching piano in her private studio, Melody’s music-teaching experience includes 20 years of public school and two years at the university level.
A dynamic clinician and innovative composer, Melody is in great demand at conventions and workshops for piano teachers across North America. She resides in Minnesota with her husband Jeff.

Contest Rules
1.
Contest is open to composers ages 5 through adult who reside in Wisconsin or study with a Wisconsin-based teacher.
2.
All entries must be original compositions. Teachers and parents cannot “help,” but may give broad advice on how to organize, how to start, how to notate, etc.
3.
Compositions may be written for piano solo, piano duet, piano and voice, or piano and another instrument. Compositions must include piano.
4.
Entrants are responsible for arranging their own performances on Nov. 5 (i.e., perform themselves and/or recruit others) and ensuring that their submissions are performable (teachers can and should advise as to practical considerations in writing for others and/or unfamiliar instruments/voice).
5.
Only one composition per entrant, per year.
6.
Composers compete within the following age groups: (age as of October 1, 2021)
Level I: Ages 5-6 ♪ Level II: Ages 7-8 ♪ Level III: Ages 9-10
Level IV: Ages 11-12 ♪ Level V: Ages 13-14 ♪ Level VI: Ages 15-18
Level VII: Amateurs (non-music majors over 18) ♪ Level VIII: Music Teachers
7.
Compositions must be handwritten or computer-engraved by the composer. Submit a legible photocopy or PDF of the composition, as no original will be returned.
8.
CD or audio/video file must accompany the manuscript (any method of audio is acceptable). No audio will be returned.
9.
Awards will be given to winners in each level as determined by the judge. Winners will perform in MAME’s afternoon recital at Heid Music in Madison, WI on Friday, Nov. 5, 2021.
10.
All entries must arrive by October 1, 2021. NO Exceptions.
11.
All entries must include the following:

Score (PDF/photocopy) clearly marked with name, address, phone number, and age group.

Audio recording/file clearly labeled with composer’s name and title of composition.

Application certified by composer.
